Dealing with Bullies by Nathan Fernandes
It was a sunny morning. I had decided to go for a walk in the park. A group of elderly people were sitting on the benches under the trees. A pack of stray dogs were running around on the grass. There were children playing on the slides and swings. Other kids were playing with frisbees and balls. It was a nice scene and I was enjoying my walk.
Suddenly a group of older boys entered the park and headed towards the kids playing with the frisbees. They grabbed the frisbee and held it above the kids’s reach. One of the older boys said , “Hey, you shorty! You can’t reach the frisbee. What are you gonna do about it? Huh? Go cry to your mom?”
One of the younger boys said , “Please don’t do that. Please give us back the frisbee”.
The older boy taunted him by saying, “If you catch the frisbee, it’s yours.”
The older boys then began throwing the frisbee to each other, high over the heads of the smaller boys. The smaller boys tried in vain to catch the frisbee, but it was impossible.
The older kid laughed, “Since you can’t catch the frisbee, it’s ours now”.
I saw the entire thing happen and I got furious. I went towards the boy and asked, “What do you think you’re doing?”
“It’s none of your business,” he replied.
I said, “You are bullying small children and I will not allow it.”
A few other people and children too came forward when they saw me arguing with the bullies. They too added their voice to mine. When the bullies say the crowd, they dropped the frisbee and ran away.
I picked up the frisbee and gave it to the younger kids and said, “Go on, enjoy your game”. I continued my walk feeling glad that I had stood up to the bullies.
